The 1991 Honda Civic Si -- the "EF" Civic Hatchback -- is a special car that was an early example of a hot hatchback. Today I'm reviewing the Civic Si, and I'm going to show you all the quirks and features of the EF Civic Si hatchback. I'm also going to drive the Si and show you what it's like on the road.

@Rali272 I'm guessing you are in the USA. It amazes me how youngsters there could have cars like that. In the UK the insurance for a youngster would be as much as the car. That is why even Lady Diana Spencer had a Metro. A typical car for a British Teenager

The base model may have had a 4-speed but my mid level model had a 5-speed and it was awesome. It was a great little car but I commuted 50 miles at the time and everyone was buying 7000lb SUVs so I decided to sell it and get something a little bigger. But I wish I had that car these days. Great little car to run around town in.

I have an 05 civic si. Super hard to find in good condition too. Everything you said about it being special because it hasn’t been modified is exactly how I feel about mine! Everything on mine is stock and I get compliments on it all the time. I am kind of obsessed with it to the point where I want to just garage it and leave it alone now because it’s becoming extinct and more and more rare LOL. And yes, when I drive mine it’s hard to explain but it really does feel like you are part of the car because there’s not really that much car around you

Just an FYI, Canadian cars had the seatbelt mounted on the B-pillar. Reason US cars had this, was the seatbelt laws of the late 80s and early 90s in US mandeted a system where the seatbelt was buckled all the time and driver could enter/exit without releasing it. Most other cars had the automated systems where the upper portion of the seatbelt would ride a rail around the door opening etc. Very strange and by mid 90s all of that foolery was done. Canadian cars never required these systems so our cars were "normal". :)

My very first car was an '89 Civic Si. Looked exactly like this, but with a little different color scheme inside. I loved everything about it and it is definitely what sparked my love of cars. Like most of these cars and most teenagers though, I added MASSIVE 16" rims, lowered it (tastefully), and went with stiffer roll bars and sway bars, an intake and exhaust too. I loved everything about this car. Thanks Doug for reviewing it!

The seatbelt was on the door because it was designed to be automatic to comply with regulations at the time. You were supposed to leave it connected to the release and slide in behind it. Those regs went away with the advent of airbags.

You totally missed the seatbelts. The door mounted seatbelts were a "passive" safety system, they were not present in the original 1988 version of the car. As such, Honda intended that the driver was to keep the belt latched at all times. Closing the door put the belt in the proper position. The warning label was there in the rare event that the belt needed to be unbuckled. These stupid systems were implemented at a time when air bags were expensive.

Brian Graff
Brian Graff Πριν 13 ημέρες
I see that somebody else mentioned it, but prior to air bags in the 1992 models, US cars required passive seat belts - in effect, the belts were designed such that they would always be connected and would close around you when you losed the door - some vehicles had the seat belt on a track around the window frame and when you closed the door it would run around the framee. The red stickers were part of this law. Cars in Canada and other countries usually did not have this as this was a US only law... no stickers either. The storage bin on the one passenger seat is because the other side has the fuel filler behind it - so there was no room on the dirver side. Also, the seats and engine were shared with the CRX Si - which I owned. Doug - I do not think you have reviewed the 84-87 CRX or the 88-91 CRX, but it should be top of your list if you can fine nice ones that were not modified.

Nice EF Civic SI. A few notes - Rear seat headrests, electrical windows as well as electrical folding mirrors were only offered with the JDM version. The cubbies on the back were for rear speakers, again, offered only with the JDM versions. Great to see an original EF Civic SI still original. FYI - I am the original owner of a 1991 Civic DX Hatchback, still original as when I took out of the dealer in November 1991. Still have the OEM radio cassette, btu have upgraded with SI parts in the interiors like seats, speedometer with tach, rear speakers, JDM center console and armrest, clock and front spoilers. My daily driver since 1991.

The seatbelts are on the door because they are meant to stay buckled all the time when you get in and out of the car. It was a "passive restraint" required because the car didnt have an airbag. Thats why large read warning labels near the buckles. Also, there is no armrest storage in the back right seat because Thats where the fuel door is.
usdm420 Πριν 25 ημέρες
By the way, those two "shallow storage cubbies" out back behind the rear passenger seats were pre-formed indents that actually housed optional speakers you could get with the car. Most only came with 2 speakers in the front doors so you could imagine how "balling" you were if you had the rear speaker option lol

The seatbelts mounted to the doors was another crude form of passive restraint, which our government considered acceptable at the time. Although nobody actually used them this way, you COULD leave the belts buckled and still enter and exit the car. It was insanely impractical as whenever the inertia reel locked you couldn't open the door, and it was a fine art not to get tangled in them, but that's why they existed, NOT because of the size of the doors. It also explains the big red warning labels...

So the reason the seat belts are mounted on the doors and the warning label by the ebrake is because cars in that era were pre airbag and those seabelts were supposed to be attached clipped into the clips so they became "automatic" seatbelts. if memory serves, there was some sort of federal mandate for seatbelts or something. So just imagine the seatbelts clipped in already and the door opens, and you get into the car, close the door and you would already be strapped in. thus the auto seatbelts.

The reason the center console has those warning labels on it is because you can leave the seatbelt buckled in permanently due to them being mounted on the doors. If you leave the belts buckled up and open the door, you can just step out without having to unbuckle because the belt swings along with the door.

Talking about the PGM FI below , that tech came from their F1 teams at the time so a version of that went into their car. I worked at Honda at the time in the UK . We had a civic DX which was the standard car , roll up windows - no colour coded bumpers - steel wheels. Then we had the GL which had electric windows , electric mirrors , power steering , better stereo , wheel trims over the steel wheels.. Then there was a rare one which was a 16 valve V-tech engine . This car had a third camshaft over the other two and when you got to the right revs it would switch to the higher cam giving you more power ( kinda like a turbo) . Interesting to see what the the USA had at the time.. I still see them on UK roads but it is a rare sight..

@Doug 4:00 The actual reason they put that in was the U.S. laws in the 70's/80's requiring the use of automatic seatbelts or airbags. The belt is supposed to be constantly buckled with the driver able to slide under or out from it when the door opens.

I owned a 90 si... The sunroof was wonderful, fresh air without road noise. A Great handling car with a super Solid practical body. You missed the gas shocks, and extra heavy axles, CV joints and bigger brakes with a beefed up super slick five speed transaxle. The Special, expensive and unique to the car super sticky 185/60 14 Bridgestone RE 88 summer tires are No longer available so You drove on all season junk; and on 30 year old bushings. You therefore missed the performance experience. There was no lean as the oversize sway bars were matched to the special tires and multilink with special bushings suspension. It stuck like glue and was actually very quick through turns. It handled so well it had its own stock racing series. 7.4 to 60 was faster than most import sedans and is still faster than a 2020 LX Accord. Honda programed fuel injection, not Bosch, had just replaced carburetors on that generation civic and was state of the art; more powerful, efficient, bullet proof and smooth. My car was stolen or I'd still have it. Nothing ever broke in three years of super hard driving and racing. Most fun car I ever owned. Next time research the car instead of showing us the cubbies.
